Handmade, handstitched felt iPhone case that looks like an iPhone, $39. latelierdeluluu.etsy.com

This blog post was inspired by my friend Melissa who just recently purchased an iPhone.  Monday night Melissa and I met for a beer at the Fountain.  At that point she had only owned her iPhone for mere hours.  She was so excited and pulled it out of her purse for me to see.  Only I didn’t see a sleek, black iPhone with a vivid, bright screen but instead a dingy (sorry M) white ankle sock with a pink stripe across the toe.

The girl was storing her fancy new iPhone in a sock that is the exact brand and style of the socks I was wearing for my run thirty minutes prior.  The AT&T barracudas couldn’t convince her to buy the “tank” cell phone cover that ends the very thought and worry of destruction.  $60 is a bit steep…and in her I’m-going-to-break-and-scratch-my-new-phone paranoia she stored her phone in a sock and headed my way for a drink.  Did I mention that I love Melissa?  I’m so happy she put her iPhone in a sock.

Here are some iPhone sleeve alternatives to a sock that may catch her eye.

Not your grandmother’s crochet. Wait, does your grandmother like Robert Pattinson?

Possibly the most amazing thing I’ve seen all week is this vampire bite necklace. The fact that this dripping blood visual is crochet is sickeningly charming–my favorite kind of charming.    Even more, the designer, Sandy Meeks, resides in Hot Springs National Park.  Knowing that these intricate crochet necklaces are so near to me makes me happy.

Visit Sandy’s etsy shop by clicking on the photo below.  You’ll see more of her creations including a crochet slit throat and a gooey eyeball.  Yarn!

Named: The Chateauroux

Named: The Chateauroux

The first words Etsy shop owner, Mandizzle, uses to describe this piece of hair decor is, “Not for the faint of heart.”

That is for Giiiiiirrrrl-oh-damn sure.

I applaud the brave, sass-town, whoa-man lady who dares grace this Miracle-Gro hairclip in a public venue.   I like to think how people would react if I were to wear this in the following places:

• Sandy’s Kitchen Express
• The Forge
• My mama’s hometown of Lookeba Sickles

Two things, nay, three things I like about Mandizzle:

♥ Her knack for creating cute, yet sometimes intimidatingly large hairclips and headbands
♥ Her big, awesome (totally jealous of it) hair
♥ She claims that her favorite movie is Twilight.

Mandizzle does offer some less, “large, gorgeous, and commanding,” hair ornamentation for the fainter of heart at her Etsy shop, which is where these photos are originally from.

Sharks = Cool

Monday, June 1st, 2009

In a recent game of Apples to Apples with friends, I was forced to choose between three of my favorite things in relation to the word, “cool.”  If you, the reader, are unfamiliar with the game Apples to Apples then I don’t know you and refuse to let you read on until you familiarize yourself with the rules.  Because my friends know me so well, giving me perfect Shannon options, I had to make one of the biggest decisions of my life.  I’m the judge, the word is “cool” and these are my top three choices out of a stack of well formulated attempts:

Vampires

Board Games

Sharks

My life flashing before my eyes.

My life flashing before my eyes.

After an upsetting, core-shaking, soul-searching 15 minutes of contemplating, I decide that sharks are the coolest of the three.  I mean, I love board games–obviously–but sharks and vampires have sharp teeth so they beat board games rather quickly.  Now deciding between sharks and vampires left me reeling especially at the suggestion of a vampire-shark (!)–yet another possible expansion of Bit Lit emerges from the depths of the human imagination.  I just said Bit Lit.

I choose sharks because they’ve been around so long.  They’re the grittiest, oldest, most classic fear-inducing set of teeth on Earth.  That’s cool.  Some understand my choice, others don’t.  I do talk about vampires a lot and am ready to play a board game at the drop of a hat so, “why sharks?” is an understandable query.

A new friend says to me, “I’ve never even heard you mention sharks before this story.”

I simply think, “Well, you haven’t known me that long so soon enough I will.  Whatever.”

I don’t think another thing about it until I start researching for a blog update.  I have posted about vampires and board games, but never sharks.  Sigh.  I do not want to admit to being wrong so I’ll qualify myself by sharing with you my love for aquariums, The Little Mermaid and Shark Week on the Discovery Channel.  Also, I own a pair of shark socks and maybe a glow in the dark shark shirt.

To round out of my life (blog), I give you a $15 shark tie available on Etsy:
