Korto Momolu (Season 5) works at a sewing machine near fellow allstar contestant, Uli Herzner (Season 3).

Last night was the premiere of the sixth Season of Project Runway which was a real disappointment for me (and not just because it’s on Lifetime now).  I’ll blog more about that later, no worries.  What I’m more concerned with now is Little Rock’s Korto Momolu’s second non-victory on Project Runway.

Before the Season 6 premiere, Lifetime had an allstars challenge where beloved and/or notorious designers from the past 4 seasons of Project Runway–no contestants were from the first season–were brought together for one more challenge.  For old times sake?  Hell no. For $100,000!  Each designer must create a mini-collection of three pieces.  Later in the show, the designers had to make one more look out of materials found in a restaurant.  Korto’s restaurant dress was indecipherable from the rest of her collection (black dress).  It fit right in while everyone else’s stuck out like a sore thumb (see: suicide bomber mini dress).  She and Daniel Vosovic were the obvious front-runners, but Daniel V pulled out the win in the end. It seems that Daniel V’s stunner dress (the one on the right) won it for him.  Korto, girl, life is hard.

Dazzling, ubiquitous Twilight series spawns supplement to vocabulary study

defining-twilight

Available on Amazon.com for $9.99

The title pretty much says it all but to clarify this is a workbook used in conjunction with the book Twilight to learn useful vocabulary words that come up in standardized tests.  Each chapter lists a group of related vocabulary words from Twilight along with corresponding page numbers for you to read the context in which each word was used.  Then you are asked to guess at the word’s meaning, which is later defined on another page along with some multiple choice questions like you’d see in the ACT or SAT.

The first word listed in Group 1, “Noble Death?” is “noble.”  The definition defining Twilight provides for this vocabulary word is:

1. Noble (p.1) means dignified or honorable, like a king… or a “vegetarian” vampire.”

There. Education. Done.

For reference, some of the other Group names are:

• Desolation
• Abstinence?
• His Topaz Eyes
• A Dazzling Rescuer
• Tousled Hair

Brian Leaf has authored several test prep books, but this seems to be his only movie-themed work.  He has his own web page selling these books along with several videos including this one that explains why he was inspired to put together this workbook for students.

Oh and don’t worry there’s one for New Moon and surely there’ll be one from each of the series.

“i am trying to please you because i care about you”

Michael Inscoe

The chapbook is available for purchase at The House for $5. Last I heard there were 7 copies left so get on it.

Local poet/whatever, Michael Inscoe published the chapbook, “i am trying to please you because i care about you” this past July.  Inscoe filled the chapbook with poems, blog posts and short stories from his website entitled quickly; this is like leaving.  Kissing/not kissing girls, Otis Redding and nonchalant self deprecating humor are some common themes in his writing.

I attended the chapbook’s release which was held at a poetry reading on the patio of The House in Hillcrest, July 15.  It was a sticky, hot evening for sure.  Not a seat was vacant leaving people to stand with their beers clenched in hand, sweat dripping from the insides of their elbows.

Inscoe read his poems in near darkness. At one point, he unsuccessfully tried to light his notes with a cell phone.  This failed attempt only made him say something like, “Nevermind.  That was a dumb idea.”  Which is precisely the kind of material he can use for his next poem.

i’m not sorry

untitled

the song made me think of missing a ‘girl that is now getting married’

I walked into the bathroom and dramatically/ angrily kicked the air

I sat down at my computer

I ‘dramatically/ angrily sipped my coffee’ and some went into my nose

I changed the song to something else

I made you a copy of one of my favorite poems by one of my ‘favorite contemporary poets’

I changed the ‘copy size’ to ‘30%’

It was hard to read but the poem was still really good

I was carrying a copy of another one of my favorite poems by a contemporary poet I like a lot in my pocket all week

folded in my pocket it was still a really good poem

I unfolded it and made a ‘55% copy’ of it

you could see the folds in the paper on the copy and you could read the writing better than the ‘30% copy’ of the other poem

both poems were really good and “made me think of missing” a ‘girl that now lives in Minnesota’ and “a ‘girl that is now getting married’”

I changed the ‘copy size’ to ‘20%’ and copied the ‘30% poem’

the poem was tiny and ‘illegible but I could still make out the shape of it’ and it still “made me think of missing a ‘girl that now lives in Minnesota’”

a new song came on

I felt numb

I felt ‘like I never wanted to feel human emotions or anything ever again’

I felt dramatic/ angry and thought: “oh yeah, those are human emotions or something just kidding”

I felt stupid and alone and kind of numb but now in a calming way

the windows were open and it was warm outside and I thought about riding my bike to go get coffee somewhere

Flowy shapes make for flawless summer attire

Fashion Feature

Erin Holifield, 24, of Little Rock rarely leaves home convinced that the outfit she’s wearing in the car ride to her destination will be the same outfit she arrives wearing at journey’s end. In a state of perpetual apprehension about what to wear Holifield arms herself with a mini-wardrobe of clothing alternatives wherever she goes. “I always have a spare change of clothes with me because I’m so indecisive,” Holifield confesses. Be it another top, a pair of pants or shoes, she’s consistently over-prepared. “I do options,” Holifield says.

The Look:

The main focus of this ensemble is the bright cobalt tank. The color is bold but the cut of the shirt drapes into a laidback breezy silhouette. The fit of the silk shirt appeals to Holifield, “I don’t like tight-fitting clothing. I like them loose and baggy.” She explains that wearing oversized or loose-fitting clothes is simply more comfortable. “Comfort is my motto,” Holifield says.

Marrying Holifield’s taste for the oversized with the skinny jean trend, she wears a style of jeans called the “slouchy skinny.” They fit relatively baggy everywhere but around the calf and ankle. “I like skinny jeans because they scrunch up at the bottom,” Holifield explains about her new denim favorite that she cannot stop wearing. “I’ve had (these jeans) about a month and wear them two or three times a week.”

Holifield claims she doesn’t pay as much attention to her accessories as her clothing, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that from looking at her. She easily layers two necklaces, carries a sharp-looking clutch and wears black leather booties with a peep toe. Nothing is too flashy or matchy-matchy making her look effortlessly cool.

Create a t-shirt design inspired by the central Arkansas area and win $500!

Sync wants you to use Little Rock and/or the surrounding areas as inspiration for a design to be used as Sync’s official t-shirt.  We’ll narrow down the entries to a choice few to be voted on by the public as well as the staff.  No need to include Sync in your design.  I believe we’ll just put a logo on the back tag area of the shirt.  These shirts won’t be sold, but handed out free at events by Sync staff.

  • Design can be formed for any color shirt (we may or may not be able to use the color you specify but suggestions are welcome)
  • Feel free to include your signature somewhere (tastefully)
  • Entries are due by midnight, August 29
  • Email entries to melissa@syncweekly.com (number of entries is unlimited)
  • Rights to the design will be owned by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Employees of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette are not eligible to enter

$500, y’all.  And I can’t enter, but YOU can so do it!
